What are the "BBT" series toolholders?
The BBT series toolholders comply with the BT MAS 403 standard.
These are taper contact toolholders. Since the spindle taper, spindle face and toolholder taper and face are all in contact, the machine spindle and toolholder act as a unit. This allows for higher radial rigidity and accuracy and we get good tool runout.
The working principle of the BBT spindle is that before clamping, the tool holder taper and spindle taper contact each other to establish a good taper fit, however, no face contact occurs. When the machine tool's spindle drawbar is activated, the tool holder is pulled into the machine tool's spindle, and the spindle expands through elastic deformation until the surfaces of the spindle and tool holder contact each other. This completes the simultaneous fit of the tool holder taper and flange with the spindle taper and face.
